Becoming Incapacitated or Naming a Representative

If you become unable to manage your SCERS account due to illness, injury, or age-related changes, it’s important to have a trusted person who can act on your behalf. SCERS allows you to authorize a representative to communicate with us, access information, and assist in managing your retirement affairs.

Planning ahead can help avoid delays in processing benefits or maintaining access to important records.

Submitting a Power of Attorney

If you wish to grant broader authority to an authorized representative—such as making benefit decisions or signing SCERS forms—you must submit a valid Power of Attorney (POA). SCERS accepts general and durable POAs that meet California legal standards.

To ensure a POA is honored:

  • Submit a certified copy to SCERS
  • SCERS staff will review and may request additional information
  • The POA must be current and properly executed

If you don’t already have a POA and become incapacitated without one, your family may need to obtain court authorization to manage your account.
