Applying for Retirement

When you’re ready to retire, SCERS is here to guide you through the process. Applying for retirement is straightforward with the Online Retirement Application (ORA) available through your MySCERS portal account, but it’s important to plan ahead, understand the timing of your benefit, and have supporting documents ready.

When to Apply

You may submit your retirement application no more than 60 days before your intended retirement date. SCERS recommends applying 30 to 60 days in advance to allow time for review and processing.

  • Applications submitted more than 60 days in advance will not be accepted.
  • Your retirement becomes effective the date you request, but no earlier than the day after your last day on payroll. SCERS cannot process retroactive retirements or begin benefits before your application is received.

How to Apply

1

Option 1: Online Retirement Application (ORA) Log in to MySCERS

Sign in to your MySCERS portal account. From the home page, click the Apply for Retirement tile to begin the Online Retirement Application.

The ORA will guide you through the required sections, including:

  • Confirming your personal information
  • Selecting your retirement date
  • Choosing your beneficiaries
  • Uploading supporting documents
  • Selecting your retirement benefit option (e.g., Unmodified, Option 1, Option 2, etc.)
2

Option 2: Paper Application (Form 6105)

If you are unable or prefer not to use the ORA, you may still apply by completing the Application for Service Retirement (Form 6105).

  • Submit the completed and signed form by mail or schedule an appointment to submit in person at the SCERS office. We cannot accept the application via Email
  • Applications may not be submitted more than 60 days in advance, and should be submitted at least 30 days before your intended retirement date for best results.

Supporting Documents

As part of your application, SCERS may request copies of the following documents:

  • Birth certificate(s) or Passport(s) for you and any beneficiary receiving a continuance
  • Marriage certificate or domestic partnership registration
  • Domestic Relations Order (DRO), if divorce applies

These documents can be uploaded directly into the ORA or submitted with a paper application. All required documents must be submitted before your retirement can be finalized.

After You Apply

Once your application is received:

  • SCERS will begin processing and confirm your retirement effective date
  • SCERS will use the benefit option you selected
  • Your first retirement benefit will typically be issued within 45 days of your retirement date.

SCERS pays retirement benefits monthly in arrears and will prorate your first payment if applicable.

Changing or Canceling Your Application

Contact SCERS to change or withdraw your application any time before your retirement becomes effective. Once your retirement date passes, your election becomes irrevocable.
