Other Employer Benefits

Retirement is more than just receiving your SCERS pension—it also involves important decisions about health and other employer-sponsored benefits. While SCERS manages your lifetime monthly retirement allowance, your employer is the place you’ll turn for information related to retiree medical, dental, and vision coverage, and other retirement savings plans.

As you approach retirement, your employer becomes a critical partner. They can help you understand if your health coverage will continue once you leave service, and how Medicare coordinates with employer-sponsored plans. Your employer also provides guidance on deferred compensation options, such as rolling over or deferring a final paycheck into a 457(b) plan to help manage taxes in retirement.

It’s important to remember that SCERS and your employer serve complementary roles. SCERS focuses on your pension—calculating your retirement allowance, processing your application, and paying your monthly benefit. Your employer, on the other hand, may provide health benefits and additional retirement savings plans . Working with both ensures that all parts of your retirement are covered, from your monthly income to your ongoing health care.

When the time comes to plan your retirement, make sure to reach out to both offices: SCERS for your pension, and your employer for your health and related benefits. Together, they will help you step into retirement with clarity and confidence.
