  • Cyril Shah Appointed to SCERS Board

    The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors on December 9 appointed Cyril Shah as a trustee to the SCERS Board of Retirement.

    Mr. Shah is the president of Shah Wealth Management and a financial advisor for the global financial services firm Raymond James. His career includes positions at Smith Barney and Wachovia Securities before he founded The Shah Group in 2001 (rebranded as Shah Wealth Management in 2016).

    Mr. Shah has held numerous volunteer positions in the local community, including chair of the PBS KVIE Board of Directors, elected trustee of the American River Flood Control District, chair of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Commission, and as a Sacramento Arts Commissioner. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley.

    Mr. Shah’s three-year term on the SCERS Board begins January 1, 2026. His appointment replaces long-time trustee James Diepenbrock whose term ends on December 31, 2025.

  • Election Results Announced for SCERS Retirement Board Miscellaneous Representative

    Final election results for the SCERS Retirement Board are now officially certified.

    Incumbent Miscellaneous Representative M. Tepa Banda retained his seat on the SCERS Board, receiving 63% of the votes, beating candidate Shelly Cortez who received 37% of the votes.

    Mr. Banda, who joined the Board in December 2022, is the director of finance for the Sacramento Area Sewer District. His new term expires December 31, 2028.

    This election cycle also included a race for one Retiree Trustee and one Alternate Retiree Trustee seat; incumbents Martha Hoover and Dave Irish ran unopposed and will retain their seats.

  • Ballot Finalized for September Board Elections

    The ballot is set for the upcoming SCERS Retirement Board election, following the close of the nomination period on August 1, 2025.

    Nominations were accepted for three positions: one Miscellaneous Representative, one Retiree Representative, and one Alternate Retiree Representative.

    Martha Hoover, the current Retiree Representative, and David Irish, the current Alternate Retiree Representative, are running unopposed. As a result, they will continue in their roles without the need for an election.

    Two candidates are competing for the Miscellaneous Representative seat: incumbent Tepa Banda, Director of Finance at the Sacramento Area Sewer District, and Shelly Cortez, Administrative Services Officer II at the Probation Department. The Miscellaneous Representative seat is held by a current employee in a non-safety position.

    Ballots for the election will be mailed to SCERS members in active employment on September 9. Voting will take place by mail from September 15 through September 26. Results are expected to be announced on October 7.
