Overview
The SCERS Board is composed of nine voting members and two alternates. Members represent a mix of County officials, employee groups, and the public, ensuring that decisions reflect a balance of perspectives. Each trustee serves as a fiduciary, obligated to act with the highest level of care, skill, prudence, and diligence in managing the system.
The Board meets monthly, with additional meetings or committee sessions scheduled as needed. All actions—whether adopting an actuarial valuation, approving an investment policy, or ruling on a disability retirement application—are carried out in public meetings and documented in agendas and minutes available on scers.gov.
The nine-member Board is composed as follows:
- Four trustees appointed* by the County Board of Supervisors (public representatives).
- Four trustees elected by SCERS members (two by general members, one by safety members, and one by retired members).
- The County Treasurer, serving as an ex officio trustee.
- Two alternates (one for safety members and one for retired members).
This structure balances the interests of members, retirees, employers, and the public, ensuring that all stakeholders are represented in the governance of the retirement system.
*The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors appoints four members of the SCERS Board of Retirement. Under Government Code Section 31520.1, the appointees “shall be qualified electors of the county who are not connected with the county government in any capacity, except one may be a supervisor, and shall be appointed by the board of supervisors.”
